As a young boy growing up in the Fiji Islands, Dr. Narayan struggled to breathe. Childhood asthma often left him searching for relief, until traditional herbal remedies transformed his health. What began as a personal healing journey sparked a lifelong fascination with the body’s remarkable ability to recover.

That experience would shape his future.

He founded Natural Wonders Healthcare with a simple belief: the human body has an extraordinary capacity to heal when given the right support. This philosophy has guided his journey for more than three decades and continues to shape everything the clinic does today.

From Personal Healing to a Lifelong Calling

Dr. Narayan’s interest in Asian medicine began in 1990 with a fascination for Asian and Native American philosophies that emphasized balance, prevention, and the body’s innate ability to restore itself. In 1993, he began his formal graduate studies in acupuncture and Chinese medicine. At the time, acupuncture was still widely considered alternative medicine. There was no internet to make research accessible, most health insurance plans did not cover treatment, and many people had never heard of the profession.

Today, acupuncture is recognized as an essential part of healthcare in California and is covered by most health insurance plans, Workers’ Compensation, and the Veterans Administration. While this transformation reflects the collective efforts of countless practitioners, researchers, educators, and policymakers, Natural Wonders Healthcare is proud to have contributed through patient care, clinical collaboration, and participation in initiatives that helped demonstrate the value of acupuncture within mainstream healthcare.

Integrative Care Becomes Modern Healthcare

Over the course of his career, Dr. Narayan witnessed the growing recognition of acupuncture and integrative medicine within mainstream healthcare.

One of the defining moments in Dr. Narayan’s career arrived during the opioid crisis. Under the leadership of Dr. Kim D. Thai in the Physical Medicine Department at Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park, Dr. Narayan was selected as one of Kaiser’s acupuncture providers for a pilot program exploring non-opioid approaches to pain management. The results demonstrated that acupuncture could effectively reduce pain while decreasing reliance on pain medications. That work helped inform the model used by Representative Bill Monning and Senator Ed Hernandez in developing portions of Covered California that expanded access to acupuncture services. It marked an important milestone in demonstrating how integrative medicine could become part of mainstream healthcare.

The experience reinforced something Dr. Narayan had believed from the beginning: effective healthcare does not always have to begin with a prescription or an invasive procedure. Sometimes, the body needs the right intervention, the right environment, and the opportunity to heal. 

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Narayan remained committed to advancing the profession through education and community leadership. As an adjunct professor at Pacific College of Health and Science in San Diego, he taught Interprofessional Communication, helping future acupuncture doctors explain acupuncture and Chinese medicine using scientific language that physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals could readily understand.

In recognition of his dedication to community service and healthcare leadership, he received a California State Assembly Certificate of Recognition presented by former Assembly member Gil Cedillo.

From One Practitioner to a Team

Natural Wonders Healthcare began as a small practice built around one practitioner and a simple idea: healthcare should treat the person, not simply the condition.

As the practice grew, so did the vision. Today, Natural Wonders Healthcare has evolved into a multidisciplinary team bringing together acupuncture, chiropractic care, medical massage, and science-based herbal medicine. It is located in the heart of West Covina’s thriving medical district, surrounded by physicians, hospitals, and healthcare professionals who serve the San Gabriel Valley. 

But the growth of the clinic has never been measured solely by the number of services offered or the number of people served. It has been measured by the people who make the experience possible.

Clinic Director Yvonne Gapusan has played a central role in that evolution, helping transform a solo practice into a team of 19 healthcare professionals who share a commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care. Her leadership has helped cultivate the supportive, patient-centered culture that Dr. Narayan envisioned—one where the healthcare team feels just as seen and cared for as the patients they serve.

Where Tradition Meets Science

Our approach has continued to evolve alongside healthcare itself. We draw from the wisdom of traditional healing systems while remaining attentive to modern research, clinical experience, and the individual needs of each patient.

Acupuncture, chiropractic care, medical massage, herbal medicine, and other therapies are not viewed as isolated treatments. They are tools within a broader approach to helping each person move toward greater health and well-being.

We believe good healthcare requires more than technical expertise. It requires listening. It requires compassion. It requires understanding that every patient arrives with a different history, a different body, and a different story.
