Acupuncture FAQ

At Natural Wonders Healthcare acupuncture is more than just a medical procedure. It is a means to an amazing healing experience. Our acupuncturists listen to every patient with compassion, perform a thorough intake, customize a unique treatment plan, and describe every detail of your journey to feeling better.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is based on ideas and theories formulated and practiced for 2,500 years. Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine, sterile, disposable needles into specific sites on the body chosen according to the guiding principles of Asian Medical theory by board licensed practitioners. Needles may be used with an electrical pulse for increased stimulation commonly referred to as Electro-Acupuncture.

Is Acupuncture treatment safe?

Yes. Acupuncture is amongst the safest of all treatment modalities within our health care system. The California Acupuncture Board maintains some of the highest standards of acupuncture training, safety, and oversight in the world.
“Although tens of millions of acupuncture needles are used annually in the United States, only about 50 cases of complications resulting from acupuncture have been reported in the medical literature over the past 20 years.” – Birch, et. al., “Clinical Research on Acupuncture”, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2004.
To put the above in perspective at least 106,000 people die each year from drugs which are properly prescribed and properly administered. More than two million suffer serious side effects. (Lazarou J, Pomeranz BH, Corey PN: “Incidence of adverse drug reactions in hospitalized patients.” JAMA 1998;279:1200.

Is Acupuncture painful and what should I expect?

Acupuncture needles are very thin and virtually pain free. Most patients do not feel the needles during the acupuncture session while other may feel a pinch, numbness, or mild electrical sensations up or down the body. These are normal experiences. Please let the acupuncturist know if you are in discomfort. We care about you and strive to make your acupuncture session pleasant and enjoyable.

Once the needles are placed there may be a slight tingling, numbness or heaviness in the area. These are positive signs that the needles are affecting the acupuncture point. Patient are comfortably positioned on padded table where they enjoy ambient lighting and soft-relaxing music to enhance their healing experience. Often, people become very relaxed and fall into a light sleep during the session.

It can treat or relieve symptoms associated with minor to severe pain while reducing our dependency on addictive, expensive, and damaging pain medications. How should I prepare?

  1. Come with any questions you have, we’re here to help you.
  2. Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to acupuncture points. We provide gowns when necessary.
  3. Don’t eat large meals just before or immediately after your visit and have a light snack before your session if you are hungry.
  4. Refrain from overexertion, drugs, or alcohol for up to 6 hours after the visit.
  5. Avoid stressful situations. Make time to relax and be sure to get plenty of rest.
  6. Be mindful of changes that you may experience between visits.

How long do treatments take?

A typical acupuncture session takes about 30-45 minutes. The first visits takes a bit longer because there are some simple paper work and your acupuncturist will go over you health issue and thoroughly describe the treatment procedures and your treatment plan.

How many treatments are needed and how often?

If you are like many of our patients, you will likely experience healing benefits either immediately or up to 24-48 hours after the first visit. In chronic or moderate to severe conditions more sessions are often necessary. The frequency and number of treatments is dependent on many variables including the etiology (cause), severity, other health complications, lifestyle, and diet. Generally, the longer the patient has had the condition the longer the course of treatment will be before showing substantial and lasting results. The acupuncturist is also a highly trained herbalist and will likely prescribe safe, evidence-based, nutritional formulations to enhance your healing results.
